Search Insights: Putting Google and Bing Data Next to Your AI Citations
How overlaying Search Console and Bing Webmaster data on AI crawls and citations reveals which pages win in classic search, AI search, both, or neither.
Classic search and AI search are often discussed as rivals. In your data they behave more like neighbors who sometimes agree and sometimes do not. A page that ranks well in Google may never be cited in an AI answer. A page that no one clicks from search may be quoted all the time. You only see this when you put the datasets side by side.
Promptwatch folds Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data into a view called Search Insights, which overlays search traffic, including Microsoft Copilot data, on AI crawls and citations. This post is about how to use that kind of overlay, whatever tool gives you the data.
The four-quadrant question
For each important page, ask two questions: does it earn traffic from classic search, and does it earn citations from AI answers? The answers sort pages into four groups.
| Strong in AI | Weak in AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Strong in search | Healthy | Search winner, AI gap |
| Weak in search | AI winner, search gap | Candidate for rework or retirement |
Strong in both
Protect these and look for the pattern. What do they share: format, depth, freshness, internal linking? Copy the pattern, not the text.
Strong in search, weak in AI
Classic SEO worked and AI did not follow. Check access first: do AI bots fetch the page successfully? If yes, check whether it answers the sub-questions models actually search for. Query fan-outs per model in Promptwatch show them. Search-optimized pages often target a keyword where AI answers want a direct, complete response.
Strong in AI, weak in search
Often a page with a clear answer and little keyword targeting. It may deserve better titles, headings and internal links to pick up classic traffic as well. It may also be a page where AI sends visits that search never did, so check visitor analytics before you change anything that works.
Weak in both
Either it does not matter or it is not discoverable. Check the sitemap, internal links and crawl status before deciding.
Why Bing and Copilot belong here
Bing Webmaster data matters for more than Bing traffic. Microsoft Copilot is one of the engines tracked through the real UI in Promptwatch, and Bing's index is relevant to how Microsoft's products find pages. Including Bing data in the same view as AI crawls helps you see whether a Copilot-driven pattern is a Bing indexing question or an AI-side one. We are careful not to claim a causal link, because we have no source for how every engine uses any index. Treat it as a hypothesis to test on your pages.
How to read the overlay
Pick a date range and a page set. Then check these in order.
- Impressions and clicks from Google and Bing for each page.
- AI crawler visits from Agent Analytics.
- AI citations from citation analytics.
- AI-referred visits from visitor analytics.
The 360 Insights view joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page, and Topic Insights shows where pages underdeliver for their topic. Search Insights adds the search side to that same picture.
Practical uses
Prioritizing refresh work
A page with strong search impressions and weak citations is high leverage: the demand exists, and the AI-side work is incremental. Put it first in the queue.
Finding prompt ideas
Search Console queries are a source of real language. Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer can suggest prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page, so you can turn queries that already bring impressions into tracked prompts.
Explaining a drop
If AI citations and search clicks fell together, suspect something site-wide: a technical regression, a migration or a content change. If only AI fell, suspect AI-specific causes such as crawler access or competitors.
Reporting to skeptics
Some stakeholders only trust Search Console numbers. Showing AI data beside their familiar numbers is a gentle way to bring them along.
Cautions
- Different units. Impressions, citations and crawls are not interchangeable. Do not add them.
- Different sampling. Search Console data and AI prompt panels have different coverage. Compare direction, not magnitude.
- Lag. Search data arrives with delay. Allow for that in week-over-week reads.
- Small samples. Pages with little traffic produce noisy numbers.
A weekly use
Spend ten minutes on the four-quadrant view: list the top five pages in the "search winner, AI gap" box, pick one, and open its crawler logs and fan-outs. That alone will give you a month of useful work.
Recommendation
Do not run classic and AI measurement in separate silos. Promptwatch brings Search Console and Bing Webmaster data into the same workspace as crawler logs, citations and AI-referred visits through Search Insights and 360 Insights. If your reports currently live in three tools, start by connecting Search Console and picking ten pages to track across all four views. The gaps will show up quickly, and they will be your own.
