Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn: Which Citation Channel to Work First

A way to choose between Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn for AI citation work, using your own prompt data instead of channel folklore.

Every few months someone announces that one social channel is the key to AI citations. It might be Reddit, then YouTube, then LinkedIn. The folklore is loud and the evidence for your category is usually missing. This post offers a way to decide with your own data, and a modest plan for each channel.

One example of how fast the picture can move: Search Engine Journal reported on an August 2026 drop in Reddit citations, per the Promptwatch fact sheet's list of press that used its data. We are not going to generalize from that to your market. We mention it only to show why a fixed rule about channels will age badly.

Step 1: look at what is actually cited for your prompts

Open your citation data and filter by source type. Promptwatch has dedicated reports for Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citations, alongside page- and domain-level analytics, and Citation Trends classifies every citation by content type and source type.

For each of your tracked prompts, note which channels appear in the sources. You are looking for three things:

  1. Presence. Does the channel appear at all for your category?
  2. Concentration. Is a handful of threads, videos or posts doing most of the work?
  3. Gap. Do competitors or third parties occupy the slots while you are absent?

A channel that never appears in your prompts is not a priority, whatever the headlines say.

Step 2: score each channel

Make a small table and fill it in from your data.

Redditfrom datafrom datafrom datajudgment
YouTubefrom datafrom datafrom datajudgment
LinkedInfrom datafrom datafrom datajudgment

The effort column is your call. A video requires production. A Reddit thread requires genuine participation over time. A LinkedIn post is faster to publish but may need a real person with an audience.

Prioritize channels with high share, a gap in your presence and an effort you can sustain.

Reddit: participation, not placement

Reddit rewards people who answer questions well and punishes people who promote. If your prompts cite threads, read them. What questions are being asked? What answers are accepted? Where are they wrong or out of date?

A sensible approach: have a real team member join the relevant communities, answer honestly, disclose affiliation and link to your material only when it directly helps. Do not create fake accounts. That is a quick way to get banned and a poor basis for a brand.

Track the specific threads with the Page Tracker, since you can add any URL, yours or someone else's.

YouTube: answers in titles and descriptions

If your prompts cite videos, look at what those videos cover and how they are titled. Many are demos, comparisons and walkthroughs. Make something genuinely useful for the same question, with a plain title, a clear description and, ideally, a transcript or chapters that state the answer.

YouTube takes more effort per asset. Pick the two or three prompts with the most video citations and answer those first.

LinkedIn: for B2B questions

Promptwatch includes LinkedIn citation reports. If your category is B2B and prompts cite LinkedIn posts or articles, check who is being cited: company pages, individual experts, employees. Posts from named experts with specific, substantive claims tend to read as more citable than generic brand updates, though we have no sourced study to prove that for AI answers, so treat it as a hypothesis to test with your own panel.

Step 3: connect channel work to your own site

Social channels are rarely the destination. A thread or a video that mentions you should lead to a page that confirms and extends the answer. Make sure the landing page exists, is crawlable and states the facts clearly. Agent Analytics lets you check that AI bots reach it, and visitor analytics show whether any AI-referred sessions arrive.

Step 4: measure and decide again in a quarter

After a quarter, rerun the table. Did your presence in the chosen channel increase in cited sources? Did the prompts you targeted shift? If yes, continue. If not, reconsider whether the channel was right or the execution was weak, and let the data tell you which.

Do not run all three channels at once with a small team. One channel done well beats three done thinly.

Common mistakes

  • Following headlines. Check your own prompts first.
  • Spamming. It damages both your reputation and your chances.
  • Ignoring owned pages. Social mentions without a strong owned page leave value unclaimed.
  • No tracking. Without a baseline, you cannot show the effect of the work.

Recommendation

Choose the channel by your citation data, then work it with real participation. Promptwatch has the Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports, Citation Trends by source type and a Page Tracker that watches the specific threads and videos that matter, so the decision rests on evidence you can show a skeptical colleague. Pull the three reports this week and fill in the table before you commit anyone's time.
