AI Search Optimization for Google AI Overviews and Bing Copilot: Structured Data and Helpful Content Official Guidance
Official Google and Bing guidance on Overviews, Copilot, structured data, and helpful content. Structured data is not required for Overviews. We rank Promptwatch for the prompt those reports skip.
Official guidance for Google AI Overviews and Bing Copilot lives on Search Central and in Bing's February 2026 AI Performance preview. This post restates those pages. Structured data is not required for Overviews. Helpful content still applies. llms.txt is unused by Google Search. We rank Promptwatch first for the prompt-level row neither webmaster tool stores.
What Google actually wrote
Read AI features and your website and Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search. Overviews summarize and link when the system thinks they add something beyond classic results. AI Mode is the longer surface. Both may use query fan-out. A supporting link can match a fan-out, not the typed query.
Eligibility tracks ordinary snippet indexing plus inclusion in Search generative AI features in Search Console. There is no extra AI-only technical bar. Practices Google lists: crawl access, internal links, page experience, important copy in text, supporting images and video, structured data that matches visible text, current Merchant Center and Business Profile.
Google's helpful content system still applies. People-first pages are still the rule. Inauthentic mention campaigns and synonym farms are still on the ignore list. Google Search does not use llms.txt.
The June 2026 generative AI performance reports list impressions, pages, countries, devices (Search), and dates. Clicks are not in that list.
Structured data, as both companies framed it
| Claim you will hear | Official position |
|---|---|
| "You need FAQ schema to enter Overviews" | Google does not require a special Overview schema type |
| Structured data helps | When it matches visible text, same as classic rich results |
| Structured data is a Copilot ranking factor Bing published | Bing's AI Performance post does not say that |
llms.txt unlocks Overviews | Google Search does not use it |
| Helpful content is obsolete now that Overviews exist | It still applies |
Keep schema that you already ship for eligible rich results. Do not invent an "AI Overview" type. Do not treat a JSON-LD block as a substitute for the paragraph a model would quote.
What Bing's AI Performance preview stores
Bing Webmaster Tools' public preview covers Copilot, Bing AI summaries, and partner integrations. Metrics: total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries (a sample of grouped phrases, not full user questions), page-level citations, and trends. The report does not indicate placement. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google Overviews.
IndexNow is the freshness ping Bing documents. Bing Places is the local listing surface. Neither is a ChatGPT mention log.
After the official reports, what we rank
GSC is the impression system of record for Overviews. Bing AI Performance is the citation system of record for Copilot on Bing. | Layer | System of record |
|---|---|
| Overview impressions | Search Console |
| Copilot / Bing AI citations | Bing AI Performance |
| Prompt, competing link, ChatGPT / Perplexity | Promptwatch |
Citation analytics, Agent Analytics, and visitor analytics (script or GTM) sit in the same Promptwatch project. Professional is $245/mo. Kick-off is $199/mo. 4.7/5 on G2, 1,840+ brands. Review: Promptwatch. Product: promptwatch.com. Rankings.
Otterly.AI includes Overviews and Copilot in the $29 base four, with up to a 7-day lag. Profound Starter at $99 annual is ChatGPT-only. Those are trackers. They do not replace Search Central or Bing's preview.

What to do this week
- Read the two Search Central URLs and Bing's February 2026 AI Performance post.
- Confirm snippet eligibility and generative-feature inclusion in GSC. Turn on IndexNow if Bing freshness is in the brief.
- Export Overview impression pages. Export Bing cited pages. Do not label either as clicks or placement.
- Load the same commercial questions into Promptwatch.
- Drop any 2026 "Overview schema hack" that reintroduces tactics Google said to ignore.
